Manual 365/346 You Ain’t Gona Break It!

blended-3-editTodays’ shot is actually 21 shots taken in Lulworth Cove this morning using a tripod and then blended together in Photoshop to get the long exposure effect on the waves, the Wet Plate look was added afterwards using The Googles Nik Collection Analog Efex2 (free plugin for LightRoom and Photoshop)

My tip for today, utilise the information and tools that are out there. If you’ve had an idea about a particular method or subject there will be a video on Youtube or a Podcast covering the subject and giving you, normally free of charge, all of the information you need to make something great.

I am a huge listener of Podcasts and can highly recommend the following:

The Petapixle Podcast  Hosted by the one and only Sharky James, (this guy is a legend, follow him on Instagram @lensshark) The podcast covers all the latest news in the photography world.

TWIP (This Week In Photo) The Behemoth of the photography world, if there’s a style of photography out there then there’s someone in the TWIP network podcasting about it. The main show is hosted by Fredrick Van Johnson and while covering all recent news tends to be more conversational and longer than Mr Sharkys offerings.

And then there’s the Improve Photography Network another huge offering of many different podcasts, the IP network tend to be more practical advice and work throughs to help you improve your own skills! (The clue is in the name!)

Manual 365/297 In My World…

… We have Ice in the Autumn.glassOk, a little jiggery pokery in today’s main shot but we’ll be lucky to get ice over the winter let alone in the autumn so a little bit of editing (I’ll detail what I’ve done below) hopefully will be forgiven.

When I got up this morning the sky was crystal clear, unfortunately, the higher the sun got  the thicker the clouds became and by the time I got into the gardens it was pretty much the same as yesterday so rather waiting in the same place I just carried on walking and pulled in tight.DSC_9598.jpgdsc_9569It’s still a glorious walk whatever the weather.

Right, techy bit for the main shot; 10 one second exposures, edited and the stacked in photoshop, mean tool applied to get the motion of the long exposure, unfortunately there was some movement in the trees and artifacts and aberrations from the different shots in the building and rope beside the path so I save the long exposure shot and then opened that, together with the first of the single shots as layers in Photoshop, added a layer mask and the painted through the original shot to add clarity to the trees then saved it back into lightroom and used the brush tool to reduce the dehaze and up the exposure on the water to give it the ice effect… Go me eh? ;O)

Manual 365/276 Because I’m Easy…

Oooo, I’m early! Normally Sunday mornings mean lay-in, fuzzy head and carpet mouth… But not this morning, up before 6 and out the door by half past, The Sun came up at just gone seven and I was getting wet feet from the dew in a field next to a misty lake…dsc_6229Challenging settings and to be honest I should have used the tripod, tighter apeture and longer exposures but, on the whole, I got a few shots I like.dsc_6191-pano

Manual 365/122 Watch Out The World’s Behind You…

Well, I did it. Up at 3:15 on a bank holiday Sunday and on the cliffs of Lulworth Cove by 5:45 for the sunrise.

And it just called out for HDR! So, who was I to resist.

Looking East DSC_3796_HDR.jpgI’ve tried to keep the drama to a minimum in the HDR shots but I love the way it’s accentuated the Wave Diffraction which is the reason the cove is the shape it is.

Looking West DSC_3791_HDR.jpgAcross St Oswalds Bay to Portland.

I do still take single shots though. DSC_3789.jpgAnd then a wander around the cove

So, that’s two weekends on the trot that I’ve been up at silly o’clock because of photography and you know what?… I love it! ;o)

Have a look at my Twitter feed, it’s mostly these blogs but I do try and retweet anything that stands out to me (There’s lots) or anything I see that’s thought provoking or informative. Also check out my followers / following, there’s some really amazing Peeps there doing some great work.

Enjoy the rest of the (longer for some) weekend.

Manual 365/108 Spaced Invaders and Roll Ups!

One discipline I am really itching to get into is street photography. I have tried it in the past to varying degrees of success the best in Portugal the worst in Aylesbury. (See previous blogs Parcel Tape and feathers and Eye of Sauron) So I’ve been scratching my head for a place to go close by that would tolerate some long haired Herbert wandering around with his camera and then it dawned on me; Glastonbury and I was right, I fitted right in!

Buskin’… Man!DSC_2884-Edit58mm @ f/5.6, 1/160th sec, ISO 100

Even though it’s only a short drive away I’ve only actually been to Glastonbury a couple of times so it was good to get a feel for the place.

And I think I will be returning, some when around the festival methinks!

All black and white shots were edited in Silver Efex Pro2 the Familiar was massively under exposed so has been bought up in Light room.
